I literally stayed up till midnight reading this book. I've seen people complain that the whole boyband-fangirl thing feels silly and unrealistic, but first of all, I think that's the point, and second of all, this book feels like a love letter to boybands and boyband fan culture with all of its ups and downs, and as someone who was obsessed with BTS in highschool, I love it. It's a shame that, much like Radio Silence, this book doesn't get much acknowledgement because it's not tied to Heartstopper at all. Also, as a queer Christian, having some religious queer rep very nearly made me cry. It's hard to find other queer Christians irl, much less in books.
I read this in one day, I couldn't put it down, I loved it, and I'm sad that this story doesn't get as much attention these days because it's not really connected to the Heartstopper show. I love the Heartstopper show but Alice's other projects deserve love too.
I've seen some people judge this book as too angsty or edgy or whatever, and I think they're missing the fact that this book is written from the point of view of a depressed teenager. Like. Of course it's gonna be all angsty and edgy. That's how depressed teenagers are. I think this book does a spectacular job of building tension up and up until we finally reach the breaking point where everything comes crashing down. You don't even realize how bad things have gotten until everything crumbles, it's great.
